Canonical is finally
ready to enter the mobile market. After years of annoying the promises and demos,
the company locked out the first two manufacturers Ubuntu phones. Meizu and BQ
Readers will be releasing phones with Linux based OS installed on them sometime
in 2014. Information about the release date, prices and specifications are
still to be determined, but we were told to expect more info at Mobile World
Congress. Mark Shuttleworth , founder of Canonical is keeping things close to
his chest, but he says that two manufacturers of "household names"
should be still on board, 2015.
The bad news is that
none of these manufacturers have a large presence in the U.S., so picking up
low -end handset Ubuntu Verizon in 2014 the chances are pretty slim. But Meizu
is well- known in China and should help young OS build visibility and BQ readers
to stay in Spain. Shuttleworth said that one of the reasons why these two
particular companies were chosen because of their “tactical” approach to the
delivery of specific markets selected phone features and specifications. The
next big challenge will be luring developers ecosystem. Shuttleworth aims to
have 50 of the best mobile applications to Ubuntu this year.
